About Typing Race Online
Race up to four other people typing the same passage, live. Race now joins the next quick race in your text language, with pace bots filling empty seats after 8 seconds; Make a room gives you a private race for friends, started by the host.
Typing Race is a free typing speed test and a live typing race in one. Take a 15, 30 or 60-second test, or type a whole passage, and see your words per minute, accuracy and consistency, with a chart of your speed second by second. Then race up to four other people typing the same passage live, try the daily passage that is the same for everyone, and climb the weekly board with your best 60-second test. Texts come in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian.
Also called: typing test, typing speed test, wpm test, typing race game.
How to play Typing Race
- Choose a test length: 15, 30 or 60 seconds, or Passage for a few sentences typed to the end. For a timed test, pick Common words or Sentences, and the text language from the menu.
- Click the text, or just start typing (on a phone, tap the text to bring up the keyboard). The clock starts on your first key.
- Type what you see. Letters you get right are filled in as you go, and mistakes show in red; use Backspace to fix them. A timed test stops when the time is up. A passage ends when it is typed exactly, mistakes fixed.
- Press Tab or Esc at any time to restart, or New text for a fresh one.
- Your result shows your WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, consistency, your right and wrong characters, and a chart of your speed and errors through the test. Try again types the same text; Next test brings a new one.
- To race people, open the Race tab: Race now joins the next quick race in your text language, and Make a room gives you a private room with a link and a code for friends.
Rules
- WPM (words per minute) counts the characters you typed correctly, five characters to a word. A timed test measures over its full length; a passage, the daily and a race measure from your first key to your last.
- Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were right: a mistake still counts against you after you fix it. Consistency shows how even your pace was from second to second, out of 100.
- The daily passage is the same for everyone each day, in each text language, and a new one arrives at 00:00 UTC. You can type it as often as you like: your best WPM of the day goes on the daily leaderboard.
- The weekly board is for the 60-second test, in any text language, with common words or sentences. Your best run of the week counts. Shorter tests and passages are just for you.
- Races: up to five racers type the same passage of two or three sentences after a short countdown. Your car moves as you type the passage correctly, so a mistake holds you up until you fix it. The first to type the whole passage wins, and a race ends after one to three minutes at the most.
- Quick races are matched by text language and start as soon as five racers are in. If fewer turn up, clearly labelled pace bots fill the empty seats 8 seconds after the first racer arrives, from slow to fast. In a private room the host presses Start race when everyone is in, and can add pace bots too. Races don't go on the leaderboards.
- Fair play: every leaderboard run and every race finish is checked on the server from the timing of your keystrokes. Pasting is blocked, and a run faster than anyone types, keys arriving faster than fingers move or keys spaced too evenly isn't counted. A phone's autocorrect, which swaps whole words at once, can look like pasting and get a run flagged, so it is best switched off.
Typing Race tips and strategy
- Accuracy first. Every mistake costs you the time to notice it, delete it and type it again. Slowing down a little and making fewer errors usually raises your WPM.
- Read ahead. Keep your eyes a word or two ahead of your fingers, so you are never waiting to see what comes next.
- Keep a steady rhythm. An even pace beats bursts and stops, and it shows in your consistency score.
- Use all ten fingers and keep them on the home row (the keys your index fingers rest on, F and J, have little bumps). It feels slower at first and pays off fast.
- Practise with Sentences as well as common words: capital letters and punctuation are where most people lose time.
- In a race, a mistake stops your car until you fix it, so watch for red and correct it at once.
Typing Race questions
What is a good typing speed?
Many people type around 35 to 45 WPM. Over 60 is fast, and over 90 is very fast. Accuracy matters as much: aim for 95% or more, and the speed follows.
Which languages can I type in?
English, Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian, each with its own common words and sentences, accents included. The test starts in the language of the page; change it with the text language menu. The Hindi pages use English texts, because typing Devanagari needs a special keyboard layout.
How do the leaderboards work?
There are two. The daily board ranks today's best WPM on the daily passage. The weekly board ranks the best 60-second tests of the week, and a new board starts every Monday. Only runs that pass the server's keystroke checks are counted.
Who are the pace bots?
Computer racers that fill the empty seats when not enough people are around, each typing at its own steady pace, from about 25 to 90 WPM. They are always marked as bots in the race and in the results, so you know who is real.
Why wasn't my run counted?
The server checks the timing of every keystroke. A run is refused if it is faster than anyone types, if keys came faster than fingers can move, if the keys were too evenly spaced to be typed by hand, or if it looks pasted. Autocorrect or text expanders that drop in whole words at once can trigger this; switch them off for a run that counts.
Can I take the typing test on my phone?
Yes. Tap the text to bring up your keyboard and type as usual. Turn off autocorrect and predictive text if you can: a swapped word counts as a mistake, and a whole word dropped in at once can stop a run from counting on the leaderboards.
How do I race my friends?
Open the Race tab and choose Make a room, then send the link or the six-character code. Up to five can race. As host you press Start race when everyone is in, and can add pace bots to fill the grid. After the race, Race again keeps everyone together for a new passage.
Is Typing Race free to play?
Yes. Typing Race on Kultured Arcade is completely free: no download, no account and nothing to buy. It runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
Do I need to download Typing Race?
No. It opens instantly in your browser and saves your progress on your device, so there is nothing to install and no sign-up.
Is there a daily Typing Race puzzle?
Yes. A new daily Typing Race is published at 00:00 UTC, the same for every player, so you can compare results with friends.
