About Hot Letters Online

Online, you pass the bomb around a room of two to eight players. Every word passes it on, the fuse keeps burning, and whoever holds it when it goes off loses a life. Last one standing wins.

Hot Letters is a free word bomb game. The bomb shows two or three letters, and you have to type a real word that contains them before its hidden fuse runs out. Play solo against the clock and climb the weekly leaderboard, or pass the bomb live with up to seven friends: every good word passes it on, and whoever is holding it when it goes off loses a life. It plays in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian and Hindi, in your browser on a computer or a phone.

Also called: word bomb, bomb word game, typing party game, word game with friends.

How to play Hot Letters

  1. Look at the letters on the bomb, for example ING.
  2. Type any real word that contains those letters together and in that order, like sing, finger or morning, and press Enter.
  3. A good word defuses the bomb in solo, or passes it to the next player online. A new set of letters appears.
  4. If the fuse runs out while you hold the bomb, it explodes and you lose a life.
  5. Use every letter of the alphabet bonus across your words to win a life back.
  6. Solo ends when your last life is gone. Online, the last player standing wins.

Rules

  • A word must contain the letters on the bomb as one unbroken group. Accents are optional: “cancion” counts for “canción”.
  • Each word can be played only once per game, by anyone.
  • Words must be in the game’s word list for the chosen language. Names of people and places don’t count.
  • The fuse is hidden. In solo it gets shorter with every word; online each bomb has its own random fuse, which keeps burning as the bomb is passed.
  • The letters adapt: quick answers bring harder letter groups, and a bang brings easier ones.
  • Solo scoring: 10 points a word, 2 more for every word in your current streak (up to 20), and a point for each letter past six.
  • In Hindi the bomb shows syllables (aksharas) such as “का” or “प्र”, and a word must contain the whole syllable.

Hot Letters tips and strategy

  • Short words are fine. When the fuse is ticking fast, “sing” beats “singularity”.
  • Keep a few words ready for common letter groups like ER, IN, ST and ING.
  • Endings help: -ing, -ed, -er and plurals turn one word into many.
  • Watch the alphabet bonus and pick words with the letters you still need when you have time to spare.
  • Online, the bomb keeps burning between players: answer fast to leave the bang for someone else.

Hot Letters questions

Is Hot Letters free?

Yes. Solo and online play are free, with no account and no download.

How many people can play online?

Two to eight players per room. Quick play puts you in a public room, and bots fill quiet rooms so a game can always start. A private room has a link, a code and a QR code to share.

Which languages can I play in?

English, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian and Hindi. The game starts in your page’s language, and you can switch before a game.

How is the weekly leaderboard checked?

When a solo run ends, the server replays it word by word with the same letters and fuses, checks every word against the word list and the time it took, and only then puts your score on the board.

Why was my word not accepted?

It must contain the letters on the bomb together, not have been played already this game, and be in the word list. Very rare words, names and abbreviations may be missing.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The bomb and the word field stay above the on-screen keyboard while you type.

Do I need to download Hot Letters?

No. It opens instantly in your browser and saves your progress on your device, so there is nothing to install and no sign-up.
