About Hide & Seek

Play against computer players who hide in sensible spots, taunt now and then and search the room the way a person would. Pick hider, seeker or take turns, and a room. Your points count toward the weekly leaderboard.

Hide & Seek is a free prop hiding party game in a 3D toy room. Hiders turn into everyday things that belong in the room, a teapot, a lamp, a crate, a potted plant or a rocking horse, then find a spot and keep very still. Seekers count with their eyes shut while the hiders hide, then hunt for props that look out of place. Play three rounds against computer players, as hider, seeker or taking turns, or live online with up to eight friends in a kitchen, a living room or a toy shop.

Also called: prop hide and seek, hide and seek game online, disguise game, hiding game.

How to play Hide & Seek

  1. Pick a room and whether you want to hide, seek or take turns, then press Start. A match is three rounds of about two and a half minutes.
  2. Hiders get 15 seconds while the seekers wait with their eyes shut. Walk up to any prop and press Copy (Space, or tap the prop) to become one just like it. Then walk to a spot where that prop would look natural and press Lock (F) so you can't be nudged.
  3. Seekers open their eyes when the hiding time is up. Walk round the room and tag any prop you think is a hider: get close, then press Space, tap the Tag button or click the prop. A wrong guess costs health; run out and you are dizzy for a few seconds.
  4. A hider who is tagged is found. They turn back into a little seeker and help hunt the others for the rest of the round.
  5. Hiders can taunt (T) for points: their prop squeaks and puffs, which tells everyone exactly where it is. A hider who keeps perfectly still for a long time starts to sparkle, so shuffle a little now and then.
  6. Use Peek (V) to lift the camera high above the room and look round while you stay put. Drag the room, or press Q and E, to turn the camera.
  7. The round ends when every hider is found or after two minutes of seeking. Roles change each round, and the player with the most points after three rounds wins.

Rules

  • Hiders score a point for every 5 seconds they stay hidden while the seekers hunt, and 10 more for lasting to the end of a round.
  • A taunt is worth 4 points, or 8 when a seeker is within six steps of you. You can taunt once every 10 seconds, and only while the seekers are hunting.
  • Seekers score 15 points for each hider they find and get 20 health back. Each wrong tag costs 10 health; at zero they are dizzy for 6 seconds and come back with half their health.
  • You can only tag a prop within reach, about an arm and a magnifying glass away. Copying works on the prop nearest to you within reach.
  • While the seekers hunt, a hider can change into another prop once every 5 seconds, with a puff of dust that anyone nearby can see.
  • A hider who has not moved for 40 seconds sparkles every few seconds until they move again.
  • With four players or fewer one person seeks each round; with five or more, two do. Everyone takes a turn at seeking as far as the rounds allow.
  • Every prop in the room is solid, plain props and hiders alike, so bumping into one tells you nothing.

Hide & Seek tips and strategy

  • Belong somewhere. A chair by the table, a cooking pot by the stove, a cushion on the rug or a teddy in the toy shop looks right. A rocking horse in the middle of the kitchen does not.
  • Look at what is already in the room before you copy. Two teapots side by side look like a set; a teapot alone in a corner looks odd.
  • Lock in place once you have found your spot, and only move when no seeker is watching. Seekers notice props that move.
  • Taunt when the seekers are on the far side of the room, or be brave and taunt right under their noses for double points.
  • Seekers: remember the room. Props are placed a little differently every round, but each kind stays where it belongs. Something in the wrong place, or one too many of something, is worth a tag.
  • Seekers: watch and listen. A squeak, a puff or a sparkle gives a hider away, and so does a prop that shuffles when it thinks nobody is looking.
  • Don't tag everything in sight. Each wrong guess costs health, and a dizzy seeker can't catch anyone.
  • Use Peek to see where the seekers are before you make a move.

Hide & Seek questions

Is Hide & Seek free?

Yes. It is free in your browser on a computer, tablet or phone, with nothing to download and no account needed.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Open the Online page and choose Make a room. Send your friends the link or the six-letter code, or let them scan the QR code. The host picks the room and starts when everyone is ready. Up to eight can play, and computer players fill any empty seats if the host wants them.

Can I choose to be the hider or the seeker?

Against bots, yes: choose Hider, Seeker or Take turns before you start. Online, the seeker's job is passed round so everyone gets a go.

Can other players cheat by looking at the game's data?

The live room never tells a seeker's browser which prop is which player or where hiders stand while they hide. Each hider's own secrets are sent sealed with a key only their browser knows. The server keeps the clock, the positions and every tag.

How does the leaderboard work?

Matches against bots count toward the weekly board. The server replays your whole match with the same rules and bots, so only real points count. The board resets every Monday.

How do I play on a phone?

Move with the stick on the left and use the big buttons on the right: Copy, Lock, Taunt and Peek as a hider, Tag as a seeker. Drag the room to turn the camera, and tap a prop to tag it or copy it.

What happens when I am found?

You turn into a little seeker and help find the others for the rest of the round. You keep the points you already scored.
